Beaumont’s Car Seat Safety Program

We are proud to be associated with Beaumont Health Systems and, like us, they are committed to your health and safety. We’re lucky that Beaumont’s Erica Surman, BSN/RN, and Pediatric Trauma Program Manager, is one of our patients and oversees the Car Safety Seat Program.

September is Baby Safety Month and next week we observe National Child Passenger Safety Week (Sept 15 – 21, 2013) and National Seat Check Saturday (Sept 21, 2013).

We talked with Erica about the importance of making sure your car seat is installed correctly and the many options available to you through Beaumont to ensure your children are safe.

Q: Tell us about your role with Beaumont and their Car Safety Seat program.

A: I am a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician as part of my position as the Pediatric Trauma Program manager. To be certified, you must take a 40 hour course, complete several quizzes, both a final written and practical exam. I must participate in at least 2 car seat events, prove that I have adequate continuing education and have 6 witnessed installations by a Child Passenger Safety Technician Instructor every two years.

Q: At Oakland-Macomb OBGYN, we deliver babies at Troy Beaumont. Is there a Car Safety Seat check, there?

A: Troy Beaumont actually piloted the program for the in-room car seat education through the Beaumont Parenting Program. They have a technician that comes into the rooms of first time parents and offers education on proper use. At this time they are unable to check the seat inside of the car, so they are often referred to our bi-monthly community car seat check events. The car seat checks are free, but are done by appointment only. We also did a car seat safety check event at the Beaumont Baby Fair!

Q: What is the most common mistake people make when installing or re-installing a car seat?

A: Most people do not read the manual for their car seat, and I was one of those people. Most everything you need to know is in the manual!

Q: Where can our patients go to make sure their car seats are installed correctly?

A: For an appointment I recommend calling early, as we fill up very quickly! 248-898-SAFE (7233). We have two locations, Mike Savoie Chevrolet in Troy, and the Waterford Fire Station # 7. You can also locate a station on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website: http://icsw.nhtsa.gov/cps/cpsfitting/. Unfortunately many programs have cut car seat safety checks due to budget constraints, so please call first to make sure they still offer their program.

Q: Is there anything else our patients should know about car seats and car seat safety?

A: Car seat safety checks are more than just making sure the seat is in tight. Each appointment is more like a mini class which often takes approximately 30 minutes per seat (per vehicle). We will first check your seat for recalls and expiration. A technician will then show you how to install your seat properly, and then make sure you do it on your own before you leave. We also talk about proper harnessing of your child, as well as the next steps for when they outgrow their current seat. It has been estimated that more than 80% of seats are misused!

On behalf of everyone at Oakland-Macomb OBGYN, we thank Erica Surman for her time, her efforts, and for this great advice.

Postcards from the Medical Outreach Team, Part 8

Janice

Saturday, April 20

Greetings in the name of the Lord from South Africa,

We had a busy day. At the children’s clinic we were blessed to give care to over 370 of the cutest children age 3 years to 18 years old. We were grateful to God that we only had a slight rain which brought all the children in the building for a short period of time. One of the highlights of the day was hearing the children singing God praises. At the clinic all of the children received some medications and received a sandwich for lunch. Many of the children we saw were treated for worms and many skin ailments. For many of the kids this will be their only doctor visit this year. The children were told that we were here because Jesus loves them. Watching the children in such a large number reminded me that kids are kids. During devotions this morning we talked about how Jesus dealt with the little children, telling His disciples to let the little children come to Me. All and all this day was a reminder to me that we are all God’s children.

Vicky

The glasses station is a very popular place! Black, brown, lipstick red, cobalt blue, animal print, and many more beautiful glasses have gone home with new, very happy owners! Several patients that stand out are a 17 year-old who got some fairly strong near-sighted glasses for the very first time, a dear older lady who broke out into song at getting her glasses (“I can see clearly now…”), and an 8 year-old boy who came in looking very discouraged but left with a pair of glasses and a huge smile on his face. It’s wonderful to see faces light up as blurry symbols become clear!

We are very thankful for the prayers from home to the God who gives us strength to do more than we could ever do on our own!

For the team,

Vicki and Janice”

Postcards from the Medical Outreach Team, Part 7

“Greetings from S. Africa!

Today was a day of rest and regrouping. I had an opportunity to lead devotionals today, where we looked at Exodus 14:13. (Thank you guys for praying for boldness).

“And Moses said to the people, ‘Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again.”

I described how God rescued the Israelites in such a miraculous way. God wanted the Israelites and the Egyptians to know that He alone was the One who would rescue them. We then spent some time recalling how God has brought rescue in our own lives. It was an encouraging time to give God praise for His undeniable work in our lives.

PrasanthMedicalOutreachTeamWe spent a few hours taking inventory of the remaining pills in our clinic in preparation for our remaining 3 clinics. Cathy, Sharon, and I looked at pediatric dosing in order to streamline our Tylenol/Ibuprofen administration. We plan to see around 450 children tomorrow so it’s important we make things simple in order to shuffle these kids through!

We spent the afternoon and evening at Richards Bay, spending an hour at the Indian Ocean. This was an awesome experience! It rained most of the day and the waters were rough. There was this blanket of mist over the beach. It was a perfect picture of God’s majesty and great power. Honestly, none of us were prepared to see a glimpse of what the Israelites may have seen thousands of years ago. It was a good day and we even saw dolphins! (That was pretty cool!)

We ended our day with two life tokens from Dakota and Megan. It was another opportunity to see God at work in each of our lives. He is doing some good things in a lot of our team members. Thank you for praying for that!

Tomorrow is our main kids clinic. Please pray for supernatural peace and divine strength/endurance to see all of these kids! Please continue to pray for precision and accuracy in diagnosis and drug distribution and God’s hand of blessing on each child.

Thank you for laboring in prayer on our behalf. Bless you.

Prasanth, for the team.”

Da Vinci Robotic Surgery

Do you know about Da Vinci Robotic Surgery?

One in three women in the U.S. will have a hysterectomy before she turns 60. And nobody wants surgery if they can avoid it. But what if there was a way to have a hysterectomy without a large incision and weeks of recovery.

Da Vinci surgery offers an alternative. It’s revolutionary and you should understand you have options. You can read more about it at our website here (link URL: http://www.oaklandmacombobgyn.com/da-vinci-robotic-surgery), or we encourage you to call and visit one of our two conveniently located offices and meet with one of our expert Doctors.

Prenatal Portraits – 3D/4D Ultrasound

It’s been said that a picture is worth a 1,000 words. But we at Oakland-Macomb OB-GYN think a 3D/4D prenatal ultrasound photo is one type of picture that leaves people speechless.

There are no words.

We are happy to be able to offer live pictures of your baby while still in the womb. The images are beautiful, ena- bling you to see your unborn baby stretch, yawn, move and swallow with a clarity much greater than a traditional 2D ultrasound.

Bonding with your baby

We can help to create a keepsake that you and your family will never forget. Our unique packages have different offerings including color photographs and DVD of the entire ultrasound session.

Timing

We recommend scheduling an appointment between 26 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. This time period offers optimal visualization of your baby. (more…)
