Meet Us Mondays: Dr. Kelly Burke

IMG_0681It’s been a busy few months for our practice as our family keeps growing – like yours. We opened our new Troy office, our third location, and we welcomed in a new doctor. Meet Dr. Kelly Burke, who comes to us from Grand Rapids and is happy to be back home in Metro Detroit practicing Obstetrics.

Dr. Burke had a life changing experience when she once volunteered for a Mission trip to the Dominican Republic where she said she learned the difference between “want” and “need.” Her life and core values were never the same after going and performing deliveries and operations where the only source of light was someone standing over her, holding a flashlight. There were geckos in the operating room, and patients often refused pain killers and narcotics following surgery (surgeries were primarily hysterectomies for enlarged uteruses). Without pain killers, Dr. Burke’s follow-up consisted of making sure patients made it into the ocean to let the twice daily salt water rinse keep the incision clean. It was hard work, but she ended up going back each of the next two years.

In her spare time, these days, Dr. Burke enjoys kayaking whenever possible, which reminds her of another life-changing experience when she and some friends spent 19-days at sea, sailing from Antigua to the Straits of Gibralter, and then 2 more days sailing through the Mediterranean Sea until they reached their final destination – Spain. On this journey, she and her fellow crew members caught their own fish (sometimes by hand), lived on rationed water, and she learned first hand what a life without abundance can feel like, and what it feels like to live not knowing what the next day will hold in store.

“Life is precious,” says Dr. Burke. “It’s an honor to bring life into this world, and I love every day I have that I get to do it.”

We’re lucky to call Dr. Burke one of our own.

Pregnant? Can’t Sleep?

If you’re pregnant, there’s a better than average chance you’ll have trouble sleeping at some point. The National Sleep Foundation’s 1998 research project found that 78% of pregnant women experience some sort of sleep issue. And if you’re reading this blog entry in the middle of the night, that sleeplessness might be happening right now.

It’s normal. Your body is going through incredible hormonal changes, and you might be battling heart burn, nausea, and a constant need to pee.

You’re not alone. Plus, each trimester of your pregnancy brings with it different and unique problems. Luckily, by adjusting your sleep positions slightly, managing when and how much water you drink, or adding a nap to your day, you might be able to get more sleep.

Of course, if you have more severe sleep issues, please schedule and appointment with us. Something like Sleep Apnea can happen during pregnancy and we’ll help you determine if treatment will help.

If counting sheep isn’t working, here are some great tips on getting better sleep.

Eat Healthy During Pregnancy and Control Cravings

Pregnancy cravings aren’t just about wanting that big bowl of chocolate ice cream topped with dill pickles (which, for the record, we’ve never heard anyone actually wanting). The “cravings” are about that extra trip (or two) to the vending machine. The impulse to pick up something at the check-out because it sounds and looks sooooo good.

But these pregnancy cravings can be managed and controlled quite simply. A “craving” is nothing more than your body screaming at you for a little more protein, or a few good carbohydrates. Not many extra calories are needed, but eating the right things will go along way to providing you more energy and controlling cravings.

Yummmm. The nachos look amazing.

Meet Us Mondays: Dr. Joseph Love, M.D.

Dr. Love is a managing partner of the practice with a special interest in obstetrics and minimally invasive surgery. He is interested in state of the art technology and performed the first robotic hysterectomy at Troy Beaumont.

“That was a thrill and satisfying on so many levels. I knew this procedure could be safer and better, and I knew a robotic hysterectomy was going to be the standard in the future.”

Dr-Joe-LoveDr. Love also has a passion for teaching and was named “Top Doc” by HOUR Magazine in their annual survey.

“Teaching helps me learn, and I consider myself a lifelong learner. Things in our field change every day, and I love that. Everything we do is smarter and safer than it was 10 years ago, and it will be better 10 years from now. I want to be a part of making my field better. When you teach and mentor, you are reminded what it’s like to question things and analyze procedures with a fresh perspective.”

He is board certified by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and he’s a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Love attended Amherst College for his undergraduate degree and Wayne State Medical School. He completed his residency at Beaumont hospital.

Tips for Choosing Your OB-GYN

by Dr. James McBride

I’ve seen expectant mothers spend an entire nine months picking out the perfect shade of green paint for a nursery or the perfect crib. Having a baby is a major life changing moment. So shouldn’t you spend at least as much effort and do as much research when choosing your OB-GYN?

Obviously, I think we’re the best team of OB-GYNs and Midwives in Metro Detroit and with three offices, we’re convenient to you and wish we could deliver every baby in town, but that’s not possible. And as much as I’d rather not admit it, we might not even be a perfect match for every mom-to-be.

Maybe your doctor is pro-natural birth and you want an epidural. You’d like someone with a birthing center, but your current Obstetrician only delivers at hospitals? You’re curious about a Mid-Wife option but aren’t sure who to ask or how to begin learning about it.

You can call our offices and schedule a meeting and consultation at any time. I get asked often about how to choose the right doctor for you and here are some tips to get started.

Decide on a Type of Provider

Our patients choose if they would like a doctor or midwife to deliver them.  Our midwives are considered “top of the midwife food chain” as Certified Nurse Midwives. They deliver in the hospital with physician back up.  Women who are at higher risk default to physician care but everyone else chooses the right fit for them.

Get Recommendations

Certainly seek advice from your friends who are also expecting or who’ve recently given birth, but don’t be afraid to ask your Obstetrician for references and talk to current patients. Bedside manner, reputation, and accessibility to doctors should all be considered when choosing.

Research Hospitals

Once you’ve found an Obstetrician you feel comfortable with, you should also follow a similar process in researching the hospital where they deliver babies. We’re proud to deliver at Troy Beaumont, but every hospital is different and you’d be wise to visit the hospitals, too, and ask for references.  We feel that there is no better hospital to deliver babies than Troy Beaumont.  The NICU is top notch and the nursing care and patient experiences are highest in the state.

Is your insurance accepted there? Are you high-risk? What is the NCIU like? Are you hoping for a water birth and do they have the facilities? These are great questions to ask.

Schedule a Consultation

As I said, you agonize over which crib you’ll buy, the bedding, and the paint color for the walls. Take some time and see if the fit is right for you.

This is a big moment in your life, and if you’re newly pregnant with your first child, for at least the next 10 months, you’ll be seeing your Obstetrician or Midwife quite a bit. For me, I like to make my patients feel like they’re joining our family, as I certainly approach it like I’m joining theirs, too. Whether you’re planning on having 1, 2, 3, 5 or more children, we’ll be seeing alot of each other.

Here’s hoping you choose Oakland-Macbom OB-GYN, but whatever you choose, make a decision that’s well researched and right for you.

Meet Us Mondays: Mary Martinovich, C.N.M.

Mary Martinovich M.S.N, C.N.M.  is a graduate of Wayne State University with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing degree from Madonna University. Mary views pregnancy as a normal, healthy process and values the relationship between the Midwife and client and advocates choice as a hallmark of care. She believes the role as the Midwife is to guide and support and to not solely be the provider of care given.  Special interests include well woman gynecological care, preconception counseling, comprehensive prenatal care, and laboring at the bedside during the birthing process. Mary is supportive of patient preferences in the labor and delivery process as she seeks to help them achieve what they value as a satisfying birth experience. Before becoming a Midwife, Mary worked as a Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse. Mary is a member of the American College of Nurse Midwives. When not in the office or hospital, Mary enjoys running and other outdoor activities, gardening, scrapbooking, and traveling.  She also greatly enjoys spending time with her wonderful friends and family.

Can You Heal and Chew Gum at the Same Time?

Gum chewing really helps.  A study including 179 patients who were randomly assigned to gum chewing after laparoscopic gynecologic surgery showed that gum chewers had a faster onset of return to bowel function and required less pain medication.  The mechanism is thought to be one of “sham feeding” where the gum chewing simulates eating and stimulates the pathway of the brain to the vagal (or relaxing part) of the nervous system.  This appears to jump start a cascade of events including the return of electric impulses causing the muscles of the bowel to contract or move things along in a predictable way and increases digestive hormones like saliva and pancreatic enzymes.  Ultimately this improves the time to healing and requires less pain medication.  This study was published in the July issue of The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the most prestigious Journal in our field. The study is graded as Level 1, the  highest level of evidence.

Dr. McBride always has great stories about his five children and how to raise triplets.  Dr. McBride says, “it’s hard to believe it’s been 15 years. Maybe because I see so many babies on their first day in this world, that I get wrapped up in the pride and emotions of it, and it always feels like my ‘first day.’ And now with our new office opening in Troy, I’m as excited today as I was 15 years, ago.”
