Gum chewing really helps. A study including 179 patients who were randomly assigned to gum chewing after laparoscopic gynecologic surgery showed that gum chewers had a faster onset of return to bowel function and required less pain medication. The mechanism is thought to be one of “sham feeding” where the gum chewing simulates eating and stimulates the pathway of the brain to the vagal (or relaxing part) of the nervous system. This appears to jump start a cascade of events including the return of electric impulses causing the muscles of the bowel to contract or move things along in a predictable way and increases digestive hormones like saliva and pancreatic enzymes. Ultimately this improves the time to healing and requires less pain medication. This study was published in the July issue of The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the most prestigious Journal in our field. The study is graded as Level 1, the highest level of evidence.
