Birthing Affirmations

The Midwives at Oakland Macomb OB-GYN are a beautiful alternative to the typical doctor-nurse-patient childbirth relationship. We are proud to have them and to be able to offer a traditional and centuries old option when you walk through the same doors where our award winning doctors practice Obstetrics and Gynecology. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be introducing you to each of our Midwives, their philosophies and approach to childbirth, and much more. We are one of only a few OBGYN offices nationwide to enthusiastically embrace and include them inside a traditional OBGYN office.

Our Midwives are aware of, and support, hypnobirthing – a straightforward and gentle approach that reminds women that childbirth doesn’t have to be scary and, at its core, is thousands of years old and relatively simple.

As your months of pregnancy roll on, it’s not uncommon to worry and wonder if you really can do it. Many women get scared and develop anxiety issues and one aspect of hypnobirthing is practicing and reciting affirmations. These affirmations are meant to redirect your thoughts and remind yourself that, yes, you can do this and you might only need some slight help from a doctor, nurse or midwife. For thousands of years, women have given birth and it’s as beautiful today as it was at the dawn of time.

Be calm. Breathe deep. Know that you are strong and able. And we invite you to recite and believe you can give birth and your are beautiful.

Last week was National Midwifery Week. We caught up with our Midwives and asked a few questions about what they do and as you’ll see, they are an amazing part of the Oakland Macomb OBGYN team.

Q: What is the biggest misconception about midwives?

A: The biggest misconception is that, as a Certified Nurse Midwife, is that we help the deliver babies at home. We’re at the office and the hospital every day. We assist women in delivering in a hospital setting (not at home). Some of us have been Nurse Midwives and part of Beaumont’s medical staff for almost 20 years. Most people don’t even know that you can birth at Beaumont into the loving hands of a midwife if you choose! The second thing that most people don’t know is that midwives provide Gynecology care to women of all ages. We see young adolescents, childbearing women and even provide care to women in menopause.

Q: What gets you out of bed every day?

A: The greatest part of our jobs is the privilege to provide personal, individualized care to women and their families! It is awesome to witness the birth of a new child and to share that fabulous experience with each family we care for. We get to know our patients really well and we love having that close connection with each and every family.

Q: Tell us why you decided to practice at Oakland Macomb OBGYN?

A: At Oakland Macomb ObGyn, we have the greatest physicians that wholeheartedly support and embrace the midwifery philosophy! They have always been extremely farsighted in knowing that women deserve to have choices in their care. They realize that women who are healthy and low risk can safely deliver into the loving hands of midwives while having a collaborative practice with the physicians. We work really well together….they respect what the midwives can do and what we have to offer.

Meet-Us Mondays: Dr. Amy Heeringa

Oakland-Macomb OB/GYN is bringing the Cleveland Clinic to you. Well, we’re bringing part of it, anyway. We are proud to introduce the newest member of our staff, Amy Heeringa, MD.

Dr. Heeringa originally hails from Oakland County and, after years of prestigious training and schooling, we could not feel luckier to be welcoming her home.  Dr. Heeringa attended the University of Michigan for her undergraduate and Medical School training.  After graduation, she was chosen by one of the most selective and prestigious OB/GYN training programs in the country, spending four years at the Cleveland Clinic.  She was widely recruited and sought after by practices throughout the country and we are proud and excited that she chose us.

Please join the entire staff of Oakland-Macomb OB/GYN in welcoming Dr. Heeringa back to Michigan.

Walking is the Perfect Pregnancy Exercise

Walking is the Perfect Exercise During PregnancyOne of the most important things you can do during your pregnancy is exercise. If you’ve been online lately, or strolled through your local bookstore, there’s no shortage of Pilate, yoga, dance, or other trendy workouts to consider. We’re not going to say any of them are bad or good, but if you haven’t mastered yoga before pregnancy, and if Pilates was never your cup of tea, don’t forget good old fashioned walking.

It’s June and maybe (hopefully) Michigan weather will stay above 50 degrees for a while and you can get outside and walk, enjoy the fresh air, and get that much needed exercise. You owe it to yourself.

We’ve found a few articles on things to consider, tips, and fun ideas to make your exercise more enjoyable. Read them on the treadmill. Go for a walk.

Postcards from the Medical Outreach Team, Part 7

“Greetings from S. Africa!

Today was a day of rest and regrouping. I had an opportunity to lead devotionals today, where we looked at Exodus 14:13. (Thank you guys for praying for boldness).

“And Moses said to the people, ‘Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again.”

I described how God rescued the Israelites in such a miraculous way. God wanted the Israelites and the Egyptians to know that He alone was the One who would rescue them. We then spent some time recalling how God has brought rescue in our own lives. It was an encouraging time to give God praise for His undeniable work in our lives.

PrasanthMedicalOutreachTeamWe spent a few hours taking inventory of the remaining pills in our clinic in preparation for our remaining 3 clinics. Cathy, Sharon, and I looked at pediatric dosing in order to streamline our Tylenol/Ibuprofen administration. We plan to see around 450 children tomorrow so it’s important we make things simple in order to shuffle these kids through!

We spent the afternoon and evening at Richards Bay, spending an hour at the Indian Ocean. This was an awesome experience! It rained most of the day and the waters were rough. There was this blanket of mist over the beach. It was a perfect picture of God’s majesty and great power. Honestly, none of us were prepared to see a glimpse of what the Israelites may have seen thousands of years ago. It was a good day and we even saw dolphins! (That was pretty cool!)

We ended our day with two life tokens from Dakota and Megan. It was another opportunity to see God at work in each of our lives. He is doing some good things in a lot of our team members. Thank you for praying for that!

Tomorrow is our main kids clinic. Please pray for supernatural peace and divine strength/endurance to see all of these kids! Please continue to pray for precision and accuracy in diagnosis and drug distribution and God’s hand of blessing on each child.

Thank you for laboring in prayer on our behalf. Bless you.

Prasanth, for the team.”
