Happy (belated) Mother’s Day to all of our mamas in the US!

Today was a day of celebration and farewells. We were blessed to worship with our Zulu brothers and sisters at Grace Evangelical Church – and what a celebration of God’s faithfulness it was!  We danced, shouted with joy, tried to clap to the beat, and uttered the little Zulu that we know.  As we sang one of my favorite Zulu hymns “Beyethe, Nkosi! (We bow before our God and King)”, I was reminded of what a mighty God we serve. The sounds of the Zulu people filled the room as we celebrated His goodness.

There were many special moments in the service today.  Bob, Esther, Geri, and Karen did a small craft with 40 Sunday school kids. They were filled with glee as they saw their handprint in paint on a memento to take home. All of the mamas on the team (Cathy, Karen, Maribeth, and Anna) and the church were called to the front of the church to honor us for Mother’s Day. As we danced to the front of the church, the gogos (grandmas) danced with no inhibition as they were called upon one at a time to honor them.  It was a joyous and extremely special moment. We also dedicated the new ACM daycare. Sharon shared the story of Kenny and God’s faithfulness in providing for ACM over the years. The daycare will now bear the name of “Kenny’s Creche” in honor of Kenny and serve as a remembrance of God’s provision and plan. The team also said their farewells to the church as next week at this time we will be home.

The afternoon was spent in rest, reflection, and fun.  We will spend tomorrow serving the ACM staff and Grace Evangelical Church members at our fourth clinic and will prepare for our last clinic up in the mountains.  Clay and a small team of people will start on a mural at the new daycare.  It will be full of whimsical African animals – so I am told.

We pray that all of you at home are healthy and well.  Please continue to pray for strength, endurance, and that we would finish strong.

We love you all!

Sanibonani!

Greetings everyone from South Africa. We are on our eleventh day of the trip and are grateful to be continuing our work here with the Mafus and the people of eSikhawini. After our day of rest on Sunday, we awoke feeling rested and energized for our fourth clinic today.

Today, we provided care for the Africa Christian Ministries staff and church members. We were happy to be able to serve the many people who have been so great to us on this trip and who have become our friends. The ACM staff have acted as translators, organizers, and helpful hands throughout our clinics, and we could not have been as effective without them. It was a joy to help them with their healthcare needs.

Some of our team members spent the day at the nearby Gubethuka Church creating an amazing mural in the daycare facility. Clay Davis, an automotive designer and talented artist, painted giraffes, elephants, and other animals on the walls, making for a bright and lively space that all can enjoy, especially the children.

We are busy preparing for our fifth and final clinic in the mountain town of Ingwavuma. It will be a long day, as we plan to leave at 5am, but we are looking forward to continue serving God’s people. We are excited to see new faces and hear the stories of the people of Ingwavuma.

The team continues to work well together, and it has been very rewarding to learn more about each individual. For us, the evening prayer meetings together have been some of the most meaningful aspects of the trip. By learning about one another’s life stories, we have become closer and more cohesive as a group.

We are so grateful for all of your support, and we ask for your continued prayers for the remaining tasks ahead. We are thinking about you, and we miss you all very much!

We love you all,
Maribeth and Nick, for the team

Last week was National Midwifery Week. We caught up with our Midwives and asked a few questions about what they do and as you’ll see, they are an amazing part of the Oakland Macomb OBGYN team.

Q: What is the biggest misconception about midwives?

A: The biggest misconception is that, as a Certified Nurse Midwife, is that we help the deliver babies at home. We’re at the office and the hospital every day. We assist women in delivering in a hospital setting (not at home). Some of us have been Nurse Midwives and part of Beaumont’s medical staff for almost 20 years. Most people don’t even know that you can birth at Beaumont into the loving hands of a midwife if you choose! The second thing that most people don’t know is that midwives provide Gynecology care to women of all ages. We see young adolescents, childbearing women and even provide care to women in menopause.

Q: What gets you out of bed every day?

A: The greatest part of our jobs is the privilege to provide personal, individualized care to women and their families! It is awesome to witness the birth of a new child and to share that fabulous experience with each family we care for. We get to know our patients really well and we love having that close connection with each and every family.

Q: Tell us why you decided to practice at Oakland Macomb OBGYN?

A: At Oakland Macomb ObGyn, we have the greatest physicians that wholeheartedly support and embrace the midwifery philosophy! They have always been extremely farsighted in knowing that women deserve to have choices in their care. They realize that women who are healthy and low risk can safely deliver into the loving hands of midwives while having a collaborative practice with the physicians. We work really well together….they respect what the midwives can do and what we have to offer.

Walking is the Perfect Pregnancy Exercise

Walking is the Perfect Exercise During PregnancyOne of the most important things you can do during your pregnancy is exercise. If you’ve been online lately, or strolled through your local bookstore, there’s no shortage of Pilate, yoga, dance, or other trendy workouts to consider. We’re not going to say any of them are bad or good, but if you haven’t mastered yoga before pregnancy, and if Pilates was never your cup of tea, don’t forget good old fashioned walking.

It’s June and maybe (hopefully) Michigan weather will stay above 50 degrees for a while and you can get outside and walk, enjoy the fresh air, and get that much needed exercise. You owe it to yourself.

We’ve found a few articles on things to consider, tips, and fun ideas to make your exercise more enjoyable. Read them on the treadmill. Go for a walk.

Prenatal Portraits – 3D/4D Ultrasound

It’s been said that a picture is worth a 1,000 words. But we at Oakland-Macomb OB-GYN think a 3D/4D prenatal ultrasound photo is one type of picture that leaves people speechless.

There are no words.

We are happy to be able to offer live pictures of your baby while still in the womb. The images are beautiful, ena- bling you to see your unborn baby stretch, yawn, move and swallow with a clarity much greater than a traditional 2D ultrasound.

Bonding with your baby

We can help to create a keepsake that you and your family will never forget. Our unique packages have different offerings including color photographs and DVD of the entire ultrasound session.

Timing

We recommend scheduling an appointment between 26 and 34 weeks of pregnancy. This time period offers optimal visualization of your baby. (more…)
